Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

This blog post is a companion post to my YouTube video where I am praying the Rosary and Nine Day Novena to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Day 1). Each mystery will define the fruit of that mystery with a brief description helping us to grow in holiness and virtue.

Day 1Sorrowful Mysteries

First Mystery – The Agony of Our Lord in the Garden

(St. Matthew 26: 36-46; St. Mark 14: 32-42; St. Luke 22: 40-46)

The fruit of this mystery is humility. Jesus humbled himself as He was going through horrific suffering before His crucifixion and death on the Cross. It brings us to think of our sinfulness and how we offend Jesus when we sin. Jesus was also tempted by the devil during His suffering but did not give in to his lies. Jesus wanted this chalice to pass Him, but He was willing to do whatever His Father willed for Him. When we are in difficult situations, we should unite ourselves to Jesus’ suffering. In doing this our suffering becomes a prayer rather than a burden offering everything up to Jesus which in turns unites us to HIM.

Second Mystery – Our Lord is Scourged at the Pillar

(St. Matthew 27: 26-31; St. Mark 15: 12-20; St. John 19: 1-16)

The fruit of this mystery is purity. We purify our sins of the flesh by denying or detaching ourselves from a particular sin. It teaches us to have respect for human life and to look at our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. Frequent fasting is one of the ways to purify these sins.

Third Mystery – Our Lord is Crowned with Thorns

(St. Matthew 27: 26-30; St. Mark 15: 15-19)

The fruit of this mystery is courage and purification of the mind. He continues to humble himself shedding blood and sweat from His head teaching us courage when things don’t go as planned in our lives. We must always trust in Him as He knows what is best for us.

Fourth Mystery – Our Lord Carries the Cross to Calvary

(St. Matthew 27: 31-33; St Mark 15: 20-22; St. Luke 23: 26-32)

The fruit of this mystery is patience in difficult times, and purification of the senses. The Lord teaches us to take up our crosses and follow Him. He is carrying us in our times of trial even if we don’t feel like He is.

Fifth Mystery – The Crucifixion of Our Lord

(St. Matthew 27: 34-56; St. Mark 15: 23- 41; St. Luke 23: 33-49; St. John 19: 17-30)

The fruit of this mystery is perseverance. Being persistent even if it’s difficult will strengthen our faith knowing that through God’s grace we purify our will, flesh, mind and senses. We experience total abandonment and surrender to God’s will depending completely upon Him for everything.
