Learning About the Brown Scapular with Mary and Preparing for Jesus

November 2, 2026

Advent Exercise:

Spend 10 minutes together as a family once a week during the Advent season. You will need a Brown Scapular, paper, crayons, and a small basket beside your Nativity scene.

If you don’t have a Brown Scapular, you can purchase The Little Brown Scapular Coloring Book here or sets of Brown Scapulars. The coloring book comes with a child-sized Brown Scapular and a glow-in-the-dark Rosary. You can also draw a Brown Scapular or download the coloring page here.

Week 1: Learn About the Brown Scapular

You can explain to your children that the Brown Scapular reminds us to follow Jesus with Mary’s help. It encourages us to become more like Jesus and Mary by practicing virtues such as kindness, gentleness, humility, and patience. Wearing the Brown Scapular is also a sign of Mary’s loving protection and a reminder that she is always watching over us.

Week 2: Make Time for Prayer

Have your children choose someone to pray for. Say a Hail Mary together, then have your children draw or write their intentions and place them in the basket.

Week 3: Put Love into Action

Each family member chooses one quiet act of kindness—helping with chores, sharing, or comforting someone in need. Write or draw that act on paper and place it in the basket as a “gift for Jesus.”

Week 4: Renew Your Commitment

Gather beside the Nativity scene and look through your prayer intentions and acts of kindness. Ask: “How did we follow Jesus with Mary’s help this Advent season?”

Finish by saying the Rosary as a family. If you don’t have time to pray an entire Rosary, then pray a decade with the intention of serving others and saying “yes” to Jesus as Mary did.

Until next time—always wear your Brown Scapular and say your Rosary daily!

Have a blessed Advent season.
