The Agony in the Garden and the Scourging at the Pillar Mysteries

Here is my YouTube video praying the Rosary and Nine Day Novena to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Day 5). St. Pope John Paul II explains these mysteries and the events from his book The Rosary of Pope John Paul II: The 20 Mysteries.

Day 5Sorrowful Mysteries

First Mystery – The Agony of Our Lord in the Garden

(St. Matthew 26: 36-39)

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.’ And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.’ And going a little father he fell on his face and prayed, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will”.

Second Mystery – Our Lord is Scourged at the Pillar

(St. John 19:1-3)

“Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him. And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe; they came up to him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ and struck him with their hands”.

“Jesus’ sufferings took their historical, concrete form from the fact that he was ‘rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes’ (St. Mark 8:31), who ‘handed him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified’ (St. Matthew 20:19)” (CCC, 572).
